Your strength

La tua forza est il mare, libero, senza catene
Your strength is like the sea, free without a chain.

If any one knows Italian, feel free to translate the rest of the song here! One of my favorites by Andrea Bocelli, its the only lyric I understand of it.

Growing up

Growing up requires from us our dreams. Dreams have to desappear, they get in the way of life.

More Sarah Brightman songs

So romantic this one! Found the lyrics on this website: http://josvg.home.xs4all.nl/cits/sb/sb4-eng.html

What are you doing this evening?
Stay a little longer
it must be this place
but don't say "no"

I will invent something
to hold you prisoner
what a need there was
to love you a little so quickly

Today's a crazy day
but the moon is my friend
if you still have a dream to throw away
us alone in the centre of a city
Just friends and then who knows?

But it's never enough
so many things to tell each other
and kiss, understand one another, hold one another
but it's never enough
and it's late, but so what?
where are you hurrying to at this hour?

Just show me how to love you
I will never leave you again
I, a seagull on the rocks,
will be like a fairy-tale, and you?
Just show me how to love you

Hunger or fever or whatever
I feel at home
inside this dream to throw away
it doesn't seem true but
seems another city

And it's never enough
so many things to tell each other
and kiss, understand one another, hold one another
and it's never enough
it's already late, but so what?
where are you going to this hour?

Just show me how to love you
and we'll laugh about it
like a seagull on the rocks
but where were you hiding?
where were you until now?

What are you doing this evening?
We'll laugh about it
perhaps another evening
it's already morning
the moon is sent away by you!

Tu Quieres Volver

Both Sarah Brightman and the Gypsy Kings do a great version of this song.

Here are the lyrics, which I've translated:

Now, you make me loose reason
Don't tell me anything, the two of us will always

We know
that night
and on the streets
the same will be

You want to return, and I don't see you anymore
You want to return, and I don't feel you anymore
You want to return, and I don't find you anymore

I think of that day,
the same as yesterday,
the same will be
...the same thoughts

July 9, 2011

Over my head

I never knew
I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Let's rearrange
I wish you were a stranger I could disengage
Just say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that's disregard
Find another friend and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your ...

And suddenly I become a part of your past
I'm becoming the part that don't last
I'm losing you and its effortless
Without a sound we lose sight of the ground
In the throw around
Never thought that you wanted to bring it down
I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves

Beautiful Trance song by Dash Berlin

Night Time

Time to go
It’s time to go
Whatever this means
He’s happy it seems
The gentle accent moves me forward
With secrets that I know were true
So I’ll be a fleeting sound (?)
A lightray out on the water
And I’ll know his secret name
And tell him about the night time

Vivo per Lei

I fell in love with this song when I was just a child. It talks about the author's love for music. It makes me feel sooo good as a musician, it perfectly expresses what I feel, the sacrifices we make. Lyrics I got here http://www.hotlyrics.net/lyrics/A/Andrea_Bocelli/Vivo_Per_Lei_%28English_Version%29.html and here is a rendition:

I LIVE FOR HER

I live for her, you know, since
the first time I met her.
I do not remember how, but
she entered within me and stayed there.
I live for her because she makes
my soul vibrate so strongly.
I live for her and it is not a burden.

I live for her too, you know,
and don't be jealous:
she belongs to all those who
have a need that is always switched on
like a stereo in the bedroom,
to someone who is alone and now knows
that she is also for him; for this reason
I live for her.

She is a muse who invites us
to brush her with the fingers.
Through a piano
death remains far away;
I live for her.

I live for her who often knows
how to be sweet and sensual;
sometimes she stuns you but
it is a blow that never hurts.

I live for her. I know she makes me
travel from town to town
and suffer a little, but at least I live.

It is painful when she leaves.
I live in hotels for her.
It grows with supreme pleasure.
I live for her in the vortex.
Through my voice
it expands and produces love.

I live for her, I have nothing else,
and how many others I shall meet
who, like me, have written on their faces
"I live for her."

I live for her
on a dais or against a wall
I live for her to the limit.
also in a harsh tomorrow.
I live for her to the very edge.
Every day
a conquest;
the protagonist
will always be her.

I live for her because now
I have no other way out,
because, you know, music
is something I have truly never betrayed.

I live for her because she gives me
rests and notes with freedom.
If there were another life I'd live it,
I'd live it for her.

I live for her, music.
I live for her.
I live for her, she is unique.
I live for her.
I live for her.
I live
for her.

Notre Dame de Paris-La Monture

Another song from the musical The Notre Dame de Paris. Its so funny, I only sort of know French, and so for the longest time I thought that the character Esmeralda, (the gypsy, the Zingara) was singing this song to the priest, for being self righteous. I thought she was saying that she was as innocent as a lamb, with a heart as pure as the sky is blue, even though she was a gypsy. Now I see there is some sort of love triangle between a character called Fleur de Lys, Esmeralda, and maybe Phoebus. Fleur de Lys wants to be as sexy and free as Esmeralda. I got some help translating from the video in this site, where you can also here this most beautiful song:

La Monture

La Monture

When we see you on your steed
What allure, what stature
A true model of rightousness
A force of nature

Or maybe you're a just a rake
a creature of luxury
that courts adventure?
And is there a heart beneath your armor

Mine is pure like azure
Let me mend your wounds
Let's forget this misadventure
I would love you if you swear
I would love you if you swear
that we will hang her,
The Gypsy

My dreams as a little girl
sewing thread in needles
I threw them to the wolf
Oh stop--I'm as innocent as a lamb
that rolls in the field.

Your words of love are injuries
your sermons are perjuries
My heart grows harder, I'll back you against the wall
Deliver me of my chains,
take me,
teach me the art of lust

I'll love you if you swear, they'll hang the Zingara

Notre Dame de Paris-Belle

There is a musical based on the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, so beautiful. Here is a song, translated somewhat clumsily by yours truly ;). The three different sections are sung by different characters

Beauty
A word you could say was invented for her
When she dances and she shows her body to the day,
a bird that spreads its wing to fly
Then I feel hell open at my feet

I put my eyes on her gypsy dress
Which makes me again pray to our Lady
That who would throw her the first stone,
does not deserve to be on earth.

Oh Lucifer!
Oh give me just one time
to glide my fingers through the hair of Esmeralda

Beauty
The devil himself is incarnated in her
to turn my eyes away from eternal God
Who has put in my being this carnal desire
To prevent me from looking towards the sky

She wears on her the original sin
To desire her makes me a criminal
She that is taken for a girl of joy, a girl of nothing
Seems to suddenly wear the cross of all humanity

Oh Notre Dame, oh give me just one chance
to push the door of the garden of Esmeralda

Beauty
Damn her big black eyes that bewitch you
the demoiselle is still be a maid?
When her movements make me see mountains and marvels
under her petticoat the colors of the rainbow

My dulcimer, let me be unfaithful to you
Before bringing you to the other one
which the man who would turn away from her
Under pain of being changed into a statue of salt

Oh Fleur-de-Lys
I'm not a man of faith
I'm going to pick the flower of love of Esmeralda

I'm posting excerpts of the Popol vuh, the Mayan Creation story, for my reasons why May 22 post. :) I'm using the Dennis Tedlock translated, 1996 copyright.

A prayer that daykeepers recite when they go to public shrines:

Make my guilt vanish,
Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth;
do me a favor,
give me strength, give me courage
in my heart, in my head,
since you are my mountain and my plain;
may there be no falsehood and no stain,
and may this reading of the Popol Vuh
come out clear as dawn,
and may the sifting of ancient times
be complete in my heart, in my head;
and make my guilt vanish
my grandmothers, grandfathers
and however many souls of the dead there may be
you who speak with the Heart of Sky and Earth,
may all of you together give strenght
to the reading I have undertaken.

Popol Vuh!

Due to my penchant for celebrating all holidays, I am reading the Popol Vuh. The Popol Vuh is the Quiche’ Mayan creation story. (Mmm, primary sources! My inner nerd glows with that new-school supply feeling.)

I suggest you read primary sources, to form your own opinion, before everyone else tells you what to believe. My goal is to read the entire Bible, Qur’an, and Upanishads.

I’m starting with the Popol Vuh, because 2012 is fast approaching! According to the Mayans, that is when the world may end. The Mayans had multiple, complex, and overlapping calendrical traditions, about the universe dying and being reborn.

I am no expert yet, but I plan to share inspiring excerpts, or parts that resonate with other cultures, as it is still one of my main goals to show the similarities between arts and beliefs of distinct cultures. I welcome your comments!

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

Sin Bandera- Te Vi Venir

I just barely have you, and already I fear losing you, love
How quickly I became attached,
How deep is all this pain.

How little I've known you,
and now I play it all on you
I don't fear betting,
its losing you I fear

No refuge remains but fantasy
There is nothing else to do but write you poetry

Because I saw you come, and I didn't doubt
I saw you arrive, I embraced you
and I put in all my passion so that you would stay
And later I kissed you, and risked the truth
I caressed you, and finally opened my heart to let you in

My love I gave you without condition, so that you would stay.

Now I'll wait a few days to see if what I gave you was enough
You don't know the terror I feel,
the wait each morning,
If you don't want to return, love would lose its feeling for ever
I wouldn't understand this world, I'd abandon the people

April 27, 2011

Sin Bandera- Suelta mi mano

No, its not necessary to understand
because reason has never served the heart,
the heart doesn't think.
No, my life, why are you making an effort?
you don't have to explain. I will always love your freedom,
despite how much it hurts.

And I do understand that you want to talk
that sometimes you need to know of me
but I don't know if I want to know of you,
to live like this, keep on like this, thinking of you

Let go of my hand, already, please
Understand that I have to go.
If you don't feel any more this love,
I have nothing else to say.
Don't say anything, now please,
I understand you, but understand me:
each word increases the hurt,
and a tear wants to leave.

And please don't stop me
I always find a way to continue and to live
though I don't have you anymore.
And no, mi life, its not worth it
for what do you want to call,
if he that was me will not be there.
This is the last dinner.

Happy Easter

Its Bunny Bunny Time! One of my favorite times of the year. May your season be filled with resurrection, rebirth, chocolate, and bunnies!!!!

Khalil Gibran- Freedom

At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.
...
You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.
...
In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle your eyes.
...
And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?
If it is an unjust law you would abolish
that law was written with your own hand  upon your own forehead.
...
And if it is a fear you would dispel, the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.
...
Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace, the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished, the pursued and that which you would escape.
These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.
And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom.

Belinda- Bella Traicion

Another favorite I have translated for you, the artist is Belinda, and the song is called  Beautiful Betrayal

I don't want to seem him again,
my soul is in two for you
I don't care about the fire in which I burn today
They say I'm love sick
that I rise and fall again for you each time you appear in front of me

Chorus:
because without you there is no way
nor destiny, I'm lost
because without you I don't care about the minutes
nor the day, because without you there isn't any present or future,
save me
from this beautiful treachery thatkilled my illusion.
Forgive me if I forget you
I'm sorry if illusion is exhausting

I don't care about what I swore to you
They tell me everything is over
that you're only a song of yesterday
a breath in the air that remains

Chorus

Where will you be when my lips search you
and where will be that dream so sweet that was the two of us
you were my beautiful betrayal!

Shakira- Si tu no vuelvas

So beautiful this song!

If you don't return,
all the seas will dry
and I will wait with you
stuck to the bottom of some memory

If you don't return,
my will, becoming smaller
I'll stay here,
next to my dog, spying horizons

If you don't return
only deserts will remain
and I'll listen if
some heartbeat remains on this earth,

which was so serene when you loved me
there was a fresh perfume that I breathed
it was so beautiful, so big, it didn't have any end...

and each night a star will come to keep me company
so that you know how I am, so you know what is going on
tell me love, love, love,
I'm here don't you see?
If you don't return, there won't be any life, I won't know what to do

I won't know what to do

If you don't return,
there won't be hope, nor anything
I'll walk without you, drinking rain

....I won't know what to do

Spice and Wolf!

Theme song from my most recent anime adventure, Spice and Wolf, with pics of the main character:

All alone,
on a journey, I lost my way;
as I stood still, my heart alone wandered.
But now I can walk again,
as far as I need to;
yes, ever since I met you
on this road.

The song travelers sing,
though I don't know it,
sounds familiar to me
as long as I'm with you.
If the world we dreamed of
exists anywhere,
let's go look for it,
beyond the wind.
The freezing dawn,
the parched midday,
the trembling night;
let's go see what's at their end.

Your eyes, which
know loneliness well,
blink, and that color
is reflected.

I'll fly into the sky
and become a crescent moon;
those mint-colored stars must be
shards of tears.

A dock in the country to the east; the western sea;
a southern town in a dark forest; a golden tower;
a hill in the south, shaken by water; above all, the same moon.

As long as you'll let me
hold your hand,
how far shall we go?
Together with you,
I can go anywhere.
Let's go embrace
the rustling scent
of a world yet unseen.

tango...can create a space to reflect on power and terror

I just read an amazing book called "Paper Tangos" by Julie Taylor. The place: Argentina. The time: the years 1966-1983, full of political instability, state sponsored terrorism, Dirty Wars, and desaparicidos. Taylor discusses how the tango provides Argentines a free, safe space to think, similar to modern dance therapy. But it is especially effective because the same controversial elements of Argentine culture are present in the dance. By dancing the tango, Argentines can grapple with impossible, forbidden topics such as hierarchy, fear, violence, machismo, authoritarianism. By dancing, they can continue to truly live, shadow of the fear of death.

Here are two selections from that book:

That the world is and always was a mess,
I already know
in the year 506
as well as in 2000....
Just like the unrespectful window
of the pawn shop
all of life has been mixed up...

Twentieth century, pawnshop window
problematic and feverish;
the squeaky wheel gets the grease
and he who doesn't steal is a fool

--from Cambalache, by Enrique Santos Discepolo

And...

dearest, it's that I cannot be there and yet I am there
when bargains are being struck over the price of a life
and exchanging one violence for another
or when you wake up with the fear of a child
when you feel something behind the door
left open as it always has been left open in the dark
it is that not even as an adult can I tell you that behind the door there is nothing at all,
because the worst is that we both know that
just there lies in ambush an obscenely bustling marketplace
where lives and violence and even tranquility are sold
but in such a nightmare carnival
never never can there be an agreement on price
nor can one know with whom one has to make the agreement
much less know if security comes from death or promises of life
or both at once

where are you that I can't tell you?
where are you that I am writing this?
and if you are by my side,
then, where am I sending this letter?

Julie Taylor, from "Paper Tangos" Public Planet books

The last sentence of her book is haunting to me:
What does your dance need? Your tango lacks scream. Dance a tango that screams.

April 1, 2011

Khalil Gibran-Joy and Sorrow

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
...
Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay sorrow is the greater."
But I say to you they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember the other is asleep upon your bed.

Update on Corruption

Good news! An Indian organization has issued millions of "zero rupee notes" in an attempt to discourage corruption. It is an ingrained part of the culture there to give and take bribes for routine things such as getting licenses. This costs India millions of dollars each year. The idea behind the zero rupee note is that it is a polite way to discourage those asking for bribes. Mexico may start a similar program soon.

India also had a recent strike against taxis, to discourage exorbitant rates.

If any of you read my my March 7th post on corruption, you know how happy this makes me!

Love hurts, without you
It hurts so much it kills

I feel wetness in me, from
seeing you cry, don't even
If you go
I think it will make me suffer

Today I would like to stop time,
the distance between us
But the light of the sky turned off
The sun doesn't come out anymore

 I'm fragility without you
How to survive the end?
Where did I hurt you?
I don't no, recuperating left

Neither you or me are guilty
But we are vulnerable
this is life
what do I have left to live for?

Love hurts without you
It rains till your soaked
Love hurts without you

It hurts to the death
Love hurts without you
Everything is so gray

We're going to conquer/ A lion and a leopard come into this open place

I won't be denied by you,
the animal inside of you
- Neon Trees

Girl you are a beauty, well I am a beast.
-Jeremih

I'll show you some of this family's secrets.
-Marlon Brando as Paul in "The Last Tango in Paris"

Here comes a lion, Father,
oh yes its a lion
We're going to conquer
A lion and a leopard come into this open place.

Fui-Reik

 Lyrics to "Fui" by Reik

Today,
with pain,
arrives the ghost of your voice
telling me
Don't cry love.

I
am a link
that has gone missing between you and I.

I
was fire for you,
Today only ashes remain
the rest of me

I
was all
and without you
I disappear a little by little and I got lost
inside of myself

It was
cold the goodbye,
the seperation of us
Please,
only bring with you the silence that remained

...

By your side I was
so strong
I never imagined loosing you,
no no no

Belanova: Rosa Pastel

A nice girl-power pop song to get your day started. Lyrics translated by LigerLily below

Yes, I wanted to be that women
the mother of your children
and, together walk towards the alter
straight to the death

And finally, not even,
both of us destroyed each other,
and finally, whatever,
You and I don't exist

No, I don't want to be that woman
She went down an abyss
And you weren't that who promised
to be my super hero

And everything ended, nothing remains
we will be two strangers and I
I will forget you
You will forget me
Until never.

And where is that button that brings happiness?
Honey moon, pink cake,
cliches and sillyness

(repeat stanzas 2-4)
